Enchantress: aleph0 is another convergence of multiple hobbies.

In the trading card game, Magic: the Gathering, there is one deck that I find myself playing over and over. One deck that I refuse to take apart. I have named this deck, “enchantress: aleph”, after the main strategy.

Artists of the game get artist proofs (APs) of cards that they have created art for, however, they have a blank white back. The blank back is to prevent them to be used in tournaments, however, an entire community has spawned off of this potential. The blank canvas.

What better way to show my love for this game (and this deck specifically), the artists behind its illustrative artwork, and fine art collecting? A deck that is entirely artist proofed, where each card was painted or sketched on by the artist themselves.

I have always found something poetic in shuffling a deck of cards that each has a painting on them. Much like how the printing press gave books and literature to the masses, the cards themselves are a vessel for art. An artist may have spent tens of hours on a piece, and in turn, millions of copies get printed. Shuffling up a deck already felt like a curated art museum to me. I got to choose what cards and artwork made it into the deck. It’s akin to choosing songs to put on a playlist.

Aleph0 takes that to the next level. What if, instead of merely choosing songs on a playlist, you gave artists specific inspirations, moods, or lyrics? An art gallery, that I was able to partially curate, and shape the creation of the art itself.
